Those recovering from addictions face additional challenges when they go to college: Often lacking the social and psychological support needed on campus early in recovery students try to go it alone or not attend school at all. A helpful, nurturing and supportive environment is crucial for continued sustained remission.
As a parent you can encourage your student to seek out the service and community necessary to support their recovery. Allowing your student to reach out and investigate our program and than take action on their own is an important step in recovery and independence. The collegiate recovery program at Kennesaw State University is designed to support students in recovery who are seeking a degree in higher education and their decision to pursue and sustain recovery. The program is not designed to treat addiction as much as it is designed to be a supportive resource where students can continue to develop in community socially, emotionally and academically.
We encourage you as a parent to talk with your student about their hopes and dreams for higher education and recovery and reach out to us with questions you may have.
For parents and families of loved ones in active addiction or recovery the Center for Young Adult Addiction and Recovery hosts a monthly support group during the Fall and Spring semester.
